How to convert NEAR Protocol to Coinbase Wrapped BTC

Converting NEAR to cbBTC on NEAR Mobile Swap is done in three simple steps through the NEAR Intents protocol: Deposit, Swap, and Withdraw.

Step 1 — Deposit NEAR from NEAR
Go to the Deposit tab and select NEAR Protocol (NEAR) on NEAR. The widget will generate a deposit address (or QR code) — send your NEAR there from any wallet. Once the deposit is confirmed on NEAR, your NEAR balance appears inside NEAR Intents.

Step 2 — Swap NEAR to cbBTC on NEAR Intents
Switch to the Swap tab, pick NEAR as the source and cbBTC as the target. Enter the amount and confirm — solvers compete to fill your order and the swap settles in seconds.

Step 3 — Withdraw cbBTC to Base
Finally, go to the Withdraw tab. Select Coinbase Wrapped BTC (cbBTC) from your NEAR Intents balance and choose Base as the destination. Enter an address from any EVM wallet such as MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet and confirm.

⚠ Important: When entering a withdrawal address, make sure it is a personal wallet you control. Some centralized exchanges do not support receiving funds from smart-contract-based deposits — sending to an exchange address may result in lost funds.

About the NEARcbBTC swap

This is a cross-chain swap: your NEAR leaves NEAR and cbBTC arrives on Base. Normally that takes a bridge plus a DEX, or a centralized exchange account. With NEAR Intents the deposit, swap and withdrawal happen in one flow, and what lands in your wallet is cbBTC on Base, not a wrapped copy you have to bridge again.

cbBTC is a tokenized version of another asset, so its price tracks its underlying rather than NEAR. Swapping between NEAR and cbBTC changes both your exposure and the network your funds live on.

About NEAR Protocol and Coinbase Wrapped BTC

What is NEAR Protocol (NEAR)?

NEAR Protocol is a smart contract platform co-founded by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov, with its mainnet going live in 2020. The network focuses on usability, offering human-readable account names such as alice.near instead of long hexadecimal addresses. It is also the chain behind NEAR Intents, the cross-chain swap system that NEAR Mobile Swap uses.

How NEAR Protocol works

Validators stake NEAR in a Proof of Stake system to produce blocks and confirm transactions. Nightshade sharding splits the network into parallel shards that process transactions side by side, which lets capacity grow as more shards are added.

What NEAR is used for

NEAR is spent on transaction fees and contract storage, and it is delegated to validators by holders who want staking rewards. Developers also use the chain for decentralized apps, AI agents and chain abstraction tools that operate across several blockchains.

NEAR supply

NEAR started with a genesis supply of one billion tokens and has no hard cap. New tokens are minted each epoch to reward validators, with the maximum annual inflation rate halved from 5% to 2.5% in October 2025, while 70% of transaction fees are burned.

Before you swap NEAR

When withdrawing to NEAR, you can send to a named account (like name.near) or to a 64-character implicit account, so check you have the correct one. Keep a little NEAR in your wallet to cover gas and storage for future transactions.

What is Coinbase Wrapped BTC (cbBTC)?

cbBTC is a wrapped representation of bitcoin issued by Coinbase. It went live in September 2024, first on Ethereum and Base, giving BTC holders a way to use their coins inside EVM applications without leaving the Coinbase ecosystem.

How Coinbase Wrapped BTC works

Every cbBTC in circulation is backed by one BTC that Coinbase holds on behalf of token holders. When a Coinbase customer wraps bitcoin, the exchange mints cbBTC to their address; when tokens are sent back for redemption, they are burned and the underlying BTC is released.

What cbBTC is used for

Holders deposit cbBTC as collateral in lending markets, pair it in liquidity pools or use it for BTC-denominated trades on Base and Ethereum. It also serves as a convenient route for moving bitcoin value into smart-contract apps while keeping price exposure to BTC.

cbBTC supply

There is no independent issuance schedule: supply expands and contracts with the bitcoin Coinbase holds in reserve, at a 1:1 ratio.

Before you swap cbBTC

This is a custodial wrapper, not native bitcoin, so the redemption guarantee rests on Coinbase. It can be withdrawn on Base or Ethereum, and you will need a little ETH on the receiving network to move it afterwards.
