How NEAR Protocol works

Validators stake NEAR in a Proof of Stake system to produce blocks and confirm transactions. Nightshade sharding splits the network into parallel shards that process transactions side by side, which lets capacity grow as more shards are added.

What NEAR is used for

NEAR is spent on transaction fees and contract storage, and it is delegated to validators by holders who want staking rewards. Developers also use the chain for decentralized apps, AI agents and chain abstraction tools that operate across several blockchains.

NEAR supply

NEAR started with a genesis supply of one billion tokens and has no hard cap. New tokens are minted each epoch to reward validators, with the maximum annual inflation rate halved from 5% to 2.5% in October 2025, while at least 70% of every transaction fee is burned.

It is issued by TG Commodities, S.A. de C.V., which moved its domicile from the British Virgin Islands to El Salvador in January 2025 and is authorised there as a stablecoin issuer.

How Tether Gold works

Each token is an undivided interest in one fine troy ounce of gold on London Good Delivery bars, the LBMA standard, held by a custodian in Switzerland. Holders with a verified Tether Gold account can redeem whole bars, which usually means depositing about 430 tokens, and then take delivery in Switzerland or have the bar sold through a broker.

What XAUT is used for

XAUT gives on-chain exposure to the gold price without storing metal yourself. People hold it as a hedge or store of value, move gold value across borders in minutes, and trade it on exchanges against stablecoins and crypto.

XAUT supply

There is no fixed cap. Tokens are issued when customers buy XAUT from Tether Gold and removed when holders redeem for gold, so supply follows the ounces held in reserve.
