How to convert Tether to Stellar

The widget above is already set to USDT on Ethereum → XLM on Stellar. The whole swap runs in one flow through NEAR Intents:

Step 1: Choose how to pay
Connect any EVM wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby that holds your USDT. Or turn on Swap from external wallet to get a deposit address and QR code you can pay from any wallet or exchange; you then add an address on Ethereum for refunds.

Step 2: Enter the amount and where to receive
Type how much USDT to swap and the Stellar address that receives the XLM, from a Stellar wallet such as LOBSTR or Freighter. The widget shows how much XLM you will receive, fees included, before you confirm.

Step 3: Confirm and send
Approve the transfer in your wallet, or send the amount to the deposit address. Once it confirms on Ethereum, solvers fill the swap and the XLM is sent to your address on Stellar. If the swap can't be filled, your USDT is refunded.

Prefer to keep a balance inside NEAR Intents? The Deposit tab adds USDT to it, Swap trades within it, and Withdraw sends tokens out to their own networks.

⚠ Important: receive on an address you control. If you send the XLM to an exchange instead, check that it accepts XLM on Stellar: some exchanges don't credit deposits that come from a smart contract.

About the USDT → XLM swap

This is a cross-chain swap: your USDT leaves Ethereum and XLM arrives on Stellar. Normally that takes a bridge plus a DEX, or a centralized exchange account. With NEAR Intents the deposit, swap and withdrawal happen in one flow, and what lands in your wallet is XLM on Stellar, ready to use there with no second bridging step.

Swapping USDT to XLM is how you buy Stellar with US dollars you already hold on-chain: you pay in a stablecoin and receive XLM directly on Stellar.

About Tether and Stellar

What is Tether (USDT)?

Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of one US dollar, issued by the company Tether since 2014. Having started on Bitcoin's Omni Layer, it has since expanded to many blockchains, including Ethereum, TRON, Solana and others.

How Tether works

Tether creates new USDT when verified customers deposit dollars and redeems tokens for dollars when they are returned, so the supply follows demand. The company reports holding reserve assets, mainly US Treasury bills and cash equivalents, to back the tokens in circulation and publishes periodic attestations of those reserves.

What USDT is used for

Traders use USDT to park funds between trades and as a quote currency on exchanges around the world. It is also common for cross-border payments and for saving in dollars in places with volatile local currencies.

USDT supply

There is no fixed supply: tokens are minted when dollars come in and burned when they are redeemed. The goal is for each USDT to be backed by reserves worth at least one dollar.

Before you swap USDT

USDT exists on many networks, and the swap widget defaults to the Ethereum version, so confirm the selected network matches the chain of your wallet before sending or receiving. Sending USDT over the wrong network can make funds difficult or impossible to recover.

What is Stellar (XLM)?

Stellar is an open-source payments network that went live in 2014, co-founded by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim and supported by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. Lumens (XLM) are its native asset, and the network is built for moving value and issuing tokens such as stablecoins.

How Stellar works

Stellar uses neither mining nor staking. Validators run the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a federated Byzantine agreement in which nodes rely on sets of peers they trust, and the network reaches consensus in under six seconds. The ledger has a built-in exchange for issued assets and, since February 2024, Soroban smart contracts.

What XLM is used for

XLM pays transaction fees, from 100 stroops (0.00001 XLM) per operation, and covers the minimum balance every account must hold. Payment apps and ramp providers use Stellar to move stablecoins and local currencies across borders.

XLM supply

One hundred billion lumens were created at launch. A 1% yearly inflation added more until validators voted to end it on 28 October 2019, and in November 2019 the foundation burned about 55 billion of its own lumens, leaving roughly 50 billion XLM with no new issuance.

Before you swap XLM

A new Stellar account only exists once it holds 1 XLM (two base reserves of 0.5 XLM), and each trustline or other entry locks another 0.5 XLM. Exchanges usually require a memo on XLM deposits, but the withdrawal field here takes only an address, so withdraw to your own wallet unless the exchange offers a muxed address starting with M. When depositing XLM manually, include the memo shown with the deposit address.

What to know before swapping Tether for Stellar

Use the widget on this page, already set to USDT on Ethereum → XLM on Stellar: connect your wallet or pay by QR code, enter the amount and your Stellar address, and confirm. NEAR Intents swaps it and sends the XLM to that address in one flow, and the widget shows the exact amount you will receive before you confirm.
