How to convert Stellar to Bitcoin

The widget above is already set to XLM on Stellar → BTC on Bitcoin. The whole swap runs in one flow through NEAR Intents:

Step 1: Choose how to pay
Connect a Stellar wallet such as LOBSTR or Freighter that holds your XLM. Or turn on Swap from external wallet to get a deposit address and QR code you can pay from any wallet or exchange; you then add an address on Stellar for refunds.

Step 2: Enter the amount and where to receive
Type how much XLM to swap and the Bitcoin address that receives the BTC, from any Bitcoin wallet. The widget shows how much BTC you will receive, fees included, before you confirm.

Step 3: Confirm and send
Approve the transfer in your wallet, or send the amount to the deposit address. Once it confirms on Stellar, solvers fill the swap and the BTC is sent to your address on Bitcoin. If the swap can't be filled, your XLM is refunded.

Prefer to keep a balance inside NEAR Intents? The Deposit tab adds XLM to it, Swap trades within it, and Withdraw sends tokens out to their own networks.

⚠ Important: receive on an address you control. If you send the BTC to an exchange instead, check that it accepts BTC on Bitcoin: some exchanges don't credit deposits that come from a smart contract.

About the XLM → BTC swap

This is a cross-chain swap: your XLM leaves Stellar and BTC arrives on Bitcoin. Normally that takes a bridge plus a DEX, or a centralized exchange account. With NEAR Intents the deposit, swap and withdrawal happen in one flow, and what lands in your wallet is BTC on Bitcoin, ready to use there with no second bridging step.

Both XLM and BTC float against the dollar, so the XLM/BTC rate moves with two markets at once. Traders use this pair to rotate between ecosystems in a single step instead of selling to a stablecoin first.

About Stellar and Bitcoin

What is Stellar (XLM)?

Stellar is an open-source payments network that went live in 2014, co-founded by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim and supported by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. Lumens (XLM) are its native asset, and the network is built for moving value and issuing tokens such as stablecoins.

How Stellar works

Stellar uses neither mining nor staking. Validators run the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a federated Byzantine agreement in which nodes rely on sets of peers they trust, and the network reaches consensus in under six seconds. The ledger has a built-in exchange for issued assets and, since February 2024, Soroban smart contracts.

What XLM is used for

XLM pays transaction fees, from 100 stroops (0.00001 XLM) per operation, and covers the minimum balance every account must hold. Payment apps and ramp providers use Stellar to move stablecoins and local currencies across borders.

XLM supply

One hundred billion lumens were created at launch. A 1% yearly inflation added more until validators voted to end it on 28 October 2019, and in November 2019 the foundation burned about 55 billion of its own lumens, leaving roughly 50 billion XLM with no new issuance.

Before you swap XLM

A new Stellar account only exists once it holds 1 XLM (two base reserves of 0.5 XLM), and each trustline or other entry locks another 0.5 XLM. Exchanges usually require a memo on XLM deposits, but the withdrawal field here takes only an address, so withdraw to your own wallet unless the exchange offers a muxed address starting with M. When depositing XLM manually, include the memo shown with the deposit address.

What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin is the first decentralized cryptocurrency, described in a 2008 white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto and brought to life when its network went live in January 2009. BTC is the native unit of that network and moves directly between users without a bank or payment processor in the middle.

How Bitcoin works

Miners compete to add blocks by running SHA-256 hashing hardware in a Proof of Work process, and the chain with the most accumulated work is treated as valid. Every full node independently checks each transaction against the rules, so the ledger's history becomes harder to alter with every block stacked on top.

What BTC is used for

Most holders treat BTC as a long-term store of value and a hedge outside the traditional financial system. It is also used for cross-border transfers, as collateral in lending markets, and as a base trading pair across the crypto industry.

BTC supply

The protocol limits total issuance to 21 million BTC. New coins enter circulation only as block rewards, and that reward is cut in half roughly every four years in an event known as the halving.

Before you swap BTC

Bitcoin blocks arrive about every ten minutes on average, so a BTC deposit can take noticeably longer to confirm than deposits on faster chains. Double-check the receiving address format before withdrawing, since Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed.
