How to convert Bitcoin to Coinbase Wrapped BTC

Converting BTC to cbBTC on NEAR Mobile Swap is done in three simple steps through the NEAR Intents protocol: Deposit, Swap, and Withdraw.

Step 1 — Deposit BTC from Bitcoin
Go to the Deposit tab and select Bitcoin (BTC) on Bitcoin. The widget will generate a deposit address (or QR code) — send your BTC there from any wallet. Once the deposit is confirmed on Bitcoin, your BTC balance appears inside NEAR Intents.

Step 2 — Swap BTC to cbBTC on NEAR Intents
Switch to the Swap tab, pick BTC as the source and cbBTC as the target. Enter the amount and confirm — solvers compete to fill your order and the swap settles in seconds.

Step 3 — Withdraw cbBTC to Base
Finally, go to the Withdraw tab. Select Coinbase Wrapped BTC (cbBTC) from your NEAR Intents balance and choose Base as the destination. Enter an address from any EVM wallet such as MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet and confirm.

⚠ Important: When entering a withdrawal address, make sure it is a personal wallet you control. Some centralized exchanges do not support receiving funds from smart-contract-based deposits — sending to an exchange address may result in lost funds.

About the BTCcbBTC swap

This is a cross-chain swap: your BTC leaves Bitcoin and cbBTC arrives on Base. Normally that takes a bridge plus a DEX, or a centralized exchange account. With NEAR Intents the deposit, swap and withdrawal happen in one flow, and what lands in your wallet is cbBTC on Base, not a wrapped copy you have to bridge again.

cbBTC is a tokenized version of another asset, so its price tracks its underlying rather than BTC. Swapping between BTC and cbBTC changes both your exposure and the network your funds live on.

About Bitcoin and Coinbase Wrapped BTC

What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin is the first decentralized cryptocurrency, described in a 2008 white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto and brought to life when its network went live in January 2009. BTC is the native unit of that network and moves directly between users without a bank or payment processor in the middle.

How Bitcoin works

Miners compete to add blocks by running SHA-256 hashing hardware in a Proof of Work process, and the chain with the most accumulated work is treated as valid. Every full node independently checks each transaction against the rules, so the ledger's history becomes harder to alter with every block stacked on top.

What BTC is used for

Most holders treat BTC as a long-term store of value and a hedge outside the traditional financial system. It is also used for cross-border transfers, as collateral in lending markets, and as a base trading pair across the crypto industry.

BTC supply

The protocol limits total issuance to 21 million BTC. New coins enter circulation only as block rewards, and that reward is cut in half roughly every four years in an event known as the halving.

Before you swap BTC

Bitcoin blocks arrive about every ten minutes on average, so a BTC deposit can take noticeably longer to confirm than deposits on faster chains. Double-check the receiving address format before withdrawing, since Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed.

What is Coinbase Wrapped BTC (cbBTC)?

cbBTC is a wrapped representation of bitcoin issued by Coinbase. It went live in September 2024, first on Ethereum and Base, giving BTC holders a way to use their coins inside EVM applications without leaving the Coinbase ecosystem.

How Coinbase Wrapped BTC works

Every cbBTC in circulation is backed by one BTC that Coinbase holds on behalf of token holders. When a Coinbase customer wraps bitcoin, the exchange mints cbBTC to their address; when tokens are sent back for redemption, they are burned and the underlying BTC is released.

What cbBTC is used for

Holders deposit cbBTC as collateral in lending markets, pair it in liquidity pools or use it for BTC-denominated trades on Base and Ethereum. It also serves as a convenient route for moving bitcoin value into smart-contract apps while keeping price exposure to BTC.

cbBTC supply

There is no independent issuance schedule: supply expands and contracts with the bitcoin Coinbase holds in reserve, at a 1:1 ratio.

Before you swap cbBTC

This is a custodial wrapper, not native bitcoin, so the redemption guarantee rests on Coinbase. It can be withdrawn on Base or Ethereum, and you will need a little ETH on the receiving network to move it afterwards.
